Iodine Deficiency - My Story!

by Ann
(Fairfield, CA)

As teens, we bought tincture of iodine and poured it into small bottles of baby oil and smeared the stuff all over ourselves when we went out to tan.

I grew up on the east coast in one of the small states and visited the beaches and pools to get that gorgeous golden look. I am paying for it dearly now...have had 3 basal cell carcinomas removed from my face, all close to my nose (which I think were partially worse because of reflection off sun glasses and eyeglasses). I always wondered what that iodine MAY have done....

I was 24 when someone finally said something about the ring around my neck, (which I really had not noticed) diagnosed as a benign goiter.

A scan revealed the gland was 4x the size it should be, but was functioning "normally." In preparation for marriage at age 28, I had thorough blood work and scans done to be sure my future husband (and I) knew what we may be getting into...and were told that anything could eventually cause the gland to fail....especially pregnancy.

I had at least 2 miscarriages (quite early) before finally giving birth to our first child after 7 years of marriage, followed in 17 mos by our second born.

By the time she was 6 mos old, I dragged myself into the doctor's office complaining of being so tired, and unable to lose the baby-weight. Tests revealed the thyroid had "failed" and now I reluctantly began synthroid (all the doctors and health plans I have been on have absolutely REFUSED to give me Armour, and almost ALWAYS only take a TSH level to determine how much levothyroxine to give me. NO KIDDING!! Despite all my reading, begging, printouts, etc., NOPE, none would do it. So why did I go along with their nonsense?

My loyal hardworking hubby has a great employer paying exorbitant monthly health insurance premiums to cover us and we couldn't afford out of plan health care....can you imagine the cost of testing, doctor bills, and meds, in addition to our own co-pays, and deductible insurance payments....

When my youngest was 4, I underwent surgery to have the isthmus removed from the thyroid. It was full of cysts which docs had thought may be thyroid cancer. The 2 lobes of the thyroid were left but the goiter look is gone because of the absence of the isthmus.

Over the years, the thyroid dosage has occasionally been lowered and is now at 125 mcg.

Hindsight: I wish we would have gone outside our health plan anyway. I know I would have been in better health by now.

I have no hair on legs, and arms, (and alarmingly thinning on scalp), with the non-existent half-brows (and shrinking) my nails are thin, brittle, have odd ridges developing like waves on the thumbnails about every 3 mos or so, weight gain without loss, lack of energy, etc., etc., New health care plan switch AGAIN just this year. New doctor....tell her all this....what does she order: of course, JUST a TSH and it comes back "normal" so she tells me to just keep on keeping on. All my bloodwork came in "normal." (CBC, WBC diff, Chole, ALT, Gluc., TSH (Of course!), Electrolytes...blah, blah, blah.

Do I FEEL good? No! I feel forgetful, sluggish, foggy-brained, and have to be a makeup artist to camouflage the scars, white patches, and thinning hair. I'm only 60 and don't think I can live to 90 like my Mom.

I developed vitiligo about 5 years ago (can never tan again--I look worse with tan patches...kinda like a pinto horse) and it's spreading relentlessly and rapidly...this "leukoderma" condition's cause is essentially unknown but is most often thought to be linked to adrenal depletion or adrenal fatigue (which is: Hmmmm...also often linked with hypothyroidism).

I've never been checked for adrenal function or integrity. No one has ever said anything about the possible iodine connection to all of this.

Your site was found because I was following links for possible treatment for my daughter's keloids from acne on her shoulders....(we'll try the Lugol's and also the peroxide/baking soda if the iodine doesn't work).

All of my issues are classified as autoimmune disorders. Oh, yes, I have cherry angiomas and getting more all the time, and was shocked to see the connection between bromine and iodine. Do you think anyone ever mentioned the possibility of iodine insufficiency to me?

Well, I submit my rant here because no one else has been listening to me

Your site mentioned iodine deficiency? That led me to this part of the website so I could at least get it all off my chest!

Thanks!

RESPONSE

Ann, I wrote to you offsite but did not receive a response back.

I wish you well. It sound like adrenal deficiency is also suspect here besides the iodine deficiency.

Take a look at adrenal fatigue and adrenal fatigue symptoms

An addendum to the update I just sent:

When I began on the iodine...I started having horrible pains in my feet....in fact, when I began slowly increasing the dosage...the pain almost made me cry. My joints seem to ache more...but I read in Dr. B's book this could be my body detoxifying. I persevered, and the pain completely went away. It felt like I had sprained my foot or something worse, but it went away almost overnight after a few days of the worst of it. I posted that I have the cherry angiomas indicative of bromine toxicity. Just for fun, I paint them (the inconspicuous ones) with the iodine, but I'm going to be more diligent and see what happens if anything.

You go girl!!!

You're on the right track.

Hi...tried to respond but doesn't look like it went through because I used my cellphone!

Wanted to update on my progress:
Per your recommendation, purchased and read Dr. Brownstein's "Iodine" book...discovered I had the incorrect form of iodine (the SSKI) so ordered and began to take the Lugol's 5% (J.Crow's) from Amazon. Started at 2 drops and over 2 months increased to 8 (50 mg).

I feel so much better!

More energy, lessening of joint aches is very obvious, the odd horizontal ridges on nailbeds disappeared, skin feels less dry/more smooth, memory is definitely better. I get a boost in activity level around 3pm most days, the opposite of what it was!

My health plan changed thyroid suppliers so I am asked to get blood work soon with the switch...you guessed it: just a TSH...what is WRONG with these doctors!??! New health care plan and providers but same old story...they won't listen!

I take 6 drops in 12 oz water w/ thyroid pill (125 mcg synthroid)with 1 pkt of EmergenC powder, and 1 tsp. of ACV. Later, with food, I take B-complex vits and Mag-Cal-Vit D tabs along with another 2 drops. I was probably depleted in all these vitamins so they have certainly helped, too.

Next, plan to purchase the Iodoral tabs, and just add Lugol's drops if I think I need them. I'm going to stay on the 50mg dose for a while to see if I should maintain, increase, or decrease. Also, after looking over your site, I'm going to get some decolorized iodine and apply it to my thin spots on scalp...now THAT would be quite a recommendation for iodine: hair restoration!!!

Also, my daughter has resisted the iodine on her keloids...so I asked her and sent the info AGAIN, begging her to research...she has so many other issues that fit the profile of iodine deficiency as well as low thyroid...I'm praying she takes advantage of the few months she has remaining on our health plan to "get well" or make giant strides.

Thanks SO much for maintaining this website: I'm learning a lot and I know we have to be careful with all that information, but it's a light at the end of the tunnel I wasn't seeing before!!

Hi Jill....per your rec., I bought/read Dr. Brownstein's book on Iodine, ordered 5% Lugol's [J Crow's from Amazon] ~ and began with 2 drops daily; gradually working up to 8 (50 mg) over 2 months. There is NO doubt I have more energy, memory improved, decrease of joint aches, skin looks and feels better, the strange horizontal ridges on my nails have disappeared. I have not gotten my daughter to try decolorized iodine on her keloids but I sent her links to read. I take the drops in 12 oz water mixed with 1 pkt. vit C, & 1 tsp. ACV; later w/food: vit B complex tabs & mag-cal.-vit D tabs. I am scheduled for TSH level next week bec thyroid supplier was changed (as usual...Dr. thinks we only need treat according to TSH levels) I want to swap the drops (kinda horrid taste!)for Iodoral tabs ~ do you see any reason why not? Next, I'll try decolorized I. on thin scalp hair. Thanks for this forum!

I am so proud of you for taking charge of your life.

I've been trying to get the word out - iodine works and saves lives.

Did a patch test on a slightly inflammed toe w/ 2% iodine tincture--color gone by morning. After AM and PM use, all soreness/redness gone by 2nd morning!

Began Eidon ionic minerals/Pot. Iodide, 2 drops (225 mcgs SSKI per 2 drops) in my morning 12 oz glass of water with my thyroid pill.

Also began painting the keloids on my daughter's shoulders w/ the 2% tinct. I want her to start the SSKI drops; (very long story about her hormonal imbalance) BUT.....

Are these the "right" solutions for us to get started on? Tincture = $5 a bottle, (1 oz) ~ the liquid concentrate = $20 (2 oz).

RESPONSE

Sounds like a good start to me - and you're healing! Yah!!!

I would suggest you consider taking the pill form, Iodoral. Please read the Iodine Supplements page on this site for more information on this product.

Keep me informed with your progress.
